London-born independent artist, songwriter and producer Omer Ahmet is turning a spontaneous family moment into an international music story after his track “Mangal Gel” reached Group Stage 3 of the Timbaland x Orbiiit competition.
Born in London with roots spanning Türkiye, Greece, Italy, the Middle East and Kenya, Omer’s music reflects the mixture of cultures, sounds and experiences that have shaped his life.
Working independently without the backing of a major record label, Omer has developed a catalogue that crosses genres and borders while maintaining one important ingredient: real-life stories.
And few stories demonstrate that better than Mangal Gel.
From a Family BBQ to an International Competition
The inspiration for Mangal Gel came from an ordinary family gathering.
During a family barbecue, Omer called out “Mangal Gel!” — essentially “come to the barbecue” — and something about those words immediately triggered his songwriting instinct.
What was simply a spontaneous call to family and friends suddenly sounded like the beginning of a song.
After the gathering, Omer went into the studio and started developing the idea. As the chords, rhythms and production came together, Mangal Gel naturally evolved into an energetic Turkish Gypsy-inspired dance track, combining Turkish and English lyrics with contemporary production and Mediterranean influences.
The result was a celebratory song built around the same feeling as the gathering that inspired it: people coming together, dancing, enjoying music and sharing a good time.
But the journey did not stop at the barbecue.
Mangal Gel was subsequently entered into the Timbaland x Orbiiit competition, giving Omer the opportunity to put his independently produced music alongside artists participating from around the world.
The track successfully progressed through the competition and has now reached Group Stage 3.
For Omer, seeing an idea born at a family BBQ reach this stage of an international music competition has been an unexpected chapter in his independent journey.
Different Roots. One Global Sound.
Omer’s multicultural background has played an important role in shaping his musical identity.
Born in London with family roots connected to Türkiye, Greece, Italy, the Middle East and Kenya, he has never viewed music as something that needs to remain within one geographical or genre boundary.
Instead, those different influences have become part of his creative identity.
Mangal Gel reflects that approach particularly strongly. Its Turkish and English lyrics, Turkish Gypsy-inspired character and modern dance production are designed to create a sound that can connect with listeners regardless of where they come from.
For Omer, music is ultimately about communication.
