WWT London Wetland Centre is inviting visitors to slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy a peaceful winter escape filled with festive family activities. As the colder season arrives, the centre has launched a new programme designed to boost wellbeing, encourage creativity, and offer families memorable experiences surrounded by wetlands, wildlife and winter landscapes.
People Are Seeking Calm This Winter
A new survey of 2,000 adults commissioned by WWT shows a clear trend: many people want to spend more time around water this winter. According to the findings, 28% of people prefer walks near lakes, ponds or wetlands during the colder months because water has a calming effect. Research also shows that spending just ten minutes in “blue spaces” can lift mood, reduce tension and improve mental clarity.
With its peaceful lakes, open skies and wildlife-rich paths, WWT London Wetland Centre has become one of the best places in the city to unwind during winter.
Festive Family Fun Throughout December
Families visiting the wetlands in December can enjoy a warm and lively schedule of festive activities. The centre will host Festive Family Fun Days every weekend from 6 to 21 December, offering:
-
Marshmallow toasting
-
Gingerbread decorating
-
Festive storytelling sessions
-
Face painting
-
Otter enrichment demonstrations
-
Seasonal crafts for children
These hands-on activities make it easy for families to enjoy both nature and the holiday season in one trip.
Creative Give a Gift to Nature Workshops
Running from 6 December to 4 January, these workshops allow visitors to create simple and meaningful eco-friendly gifts, including:
-
Seeded thank-you cards
-
Pinecone bird feeders
These activities help children learn small but impactful ways to care for nature during winter.
Wellbeing Workshops for Adults
Winter can be a busy and draining time, so WWT London Wetland Centre has also introduced gentle creative workshops aimed at boosting relaxation and mindfulness.
Cyanotype Printmaking Workshop — 6 December
Participants can make their own botanical art using the historic cyanotype process and explore seasonal plants found around the wetlands.
Sip and Paint Workshop — 20 December
Visitors can enjoy a soothing winter moment by painting with guidance while sipping a warm drink. It’s aimed at adults who want a calm, artistic break from the busyness of December.
Both workshops focus on creativity, mental wellbeing and reconnecting with the natural environment.
Seasonal Performances and Special Guests
To add extra festive charm, the wetlands will also feature:
-
Gospel Choir performances — 13 & 14 December
-
Bubbleologist shows — 6, 7, 20 & 21 December
These special moments bring joy to families while keeping the peaceful spirit of the wetlands intact.
A Winter Wonderland for Wildlife Lovers
Winter is one of the most beautiful times to visit WWT London Wetland Centre. Migratory birds arrive in large numbers, creating picture-perfect scenes of swans, geese, ducks and frosty landscapes. For many nature lovers, it is the most magical season of the year.
The survey also revealed that 60% of people say Boxing Day is their favourite time to get outdoors, making the wetlands an ideal place for a peaceful post-Christmas walk.
Why WWT London Wetland Centre Matters
Commenting on the winter season, Alexia Hollinshead said:
“Winter here is all about space, calm and connection. Whether families join us for a festive workshop or simply take a quiet walk by the water, the wetlands give people room to breathe and reset.”
With so many Londoners seeking calm, creativity and outdoor time, the centre offers a rare mix of wellbeing activities, seasonal magic and natural beauty.
