South London primary schools invited to year 5 football ‘World Cup’

Primary schools across Lambeth, Southwark and Westminster have been invited to register Year 5 pupils for a seven-a-side football tournament at Kennington Park on Wednesday 17 June — the same day England play their opening group game against Croatia in Dallas at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The event runs from 9.30am to 2pm and is hosted by London Nautical, City of London Academy, a secondary school in Lambeth. The day is focused on participation rather than elite competition — teamwork, confidence and enjoyment are the stated priorities.

Registration is free for schools. Sign up at londonnautical.cola.org.uk/football.

The Football Academy Launching in 2027

The tournament doubles as a launch event for a new 11–16 football academy at London Nautical, which opens in September 2027. The academy will combine academic study with elite football training, delivered in partnership with youth coaching provider Volenti Academy.

The programme builds on an existing sixth-form football pathway at the school that has produced professional players, most notably Reiss Nelson — the Arsenal winger who spent last season on loan at Brentford.

The academy accepts applications from pupils across London. More information is available at londonnautical.cola.org.uk.

About London Nautical and the City of London Academies Trust

London Nautical, City of London Academy joined the City of London Academies Trust in 2026. The Trust operates the City of London Corporation’s 12 sponsored academies across Hackney, Islington, Newham and Southwark — all high-performing schools serving some of London’s most diverse communities.

The school itself has been based in Lower Marsh, Waterloo since its founding over a century ago, and sits within walking distance of Kennington Park — the venue for the June 17 tournament.
