Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station have announced a major new partnership to build 200 high-quality council homes as part of the next phase of the landmark 42-acre redevelopment. This marks an important new stage in the ongoing transformation of Battersea Power Station, expanding its growing neighbourhood of homes, workplaces, public spaces and cultural attractions.
A Key Step in Tackling Local Housing Needs
The new council homes will be delivered through the council’s Homes for Wandsworth programme. They will be built on a currently unused plot within Phase 5 of the Battersea Power Station masterplan, located to the east side of the Grade II* listed building.
If planning permission and funding approval are granted, the development will provide well-designed, modern homes for local families at social rent levels. This represents a significant contribution toward addressing the housing shortage in the borough and helping create mixed, balanced communities.
A New Vision for the Battersea Neighbourhood
Battersea Power Station is entering a new chapter with long-term plans to shape how the riverside district evolves over the next decade. Future phases aim to bring:
-
New cultural attractions
-
Additional entertainment and leisure spaces
-
More homes and workplaces
-
Greater community amenities
These priorities will help support economic growth and strengthen the area’s position as one of London’s most vibrant destinations.
Design Inspired by Battersea’s Iconic History
Early design proposals for the new council homes draw inspiration from the Power Station’s 1930s art deco architecture. The development will transform the brownfield site into a connected and attractive part of the wider neighbourhood.
The location benefits from excellent transport links, including close access to Battersea Power Station Underground station. Plans for the area also include:
-
New sustainable public spaces
-
Tree-lined streets
-
Family-friendly outdoor areas
-
New opportunities for local businesses, cafés and community venues
These features aim to support inclusive local growth and create a lively, welcoming riverside environment.
Delivered Through a Major Partnership
Wandsworth Council is working closely with Battersea Power Station and the Greater London Authority (GLA) to deliver the project. The scheme supports shared goals of fair growth, stronger communities and the faster development of social housing across the city.
Funding will come from the council’s Housing Revenue Account, supported by a GLA grant.
A detailed planning application is expected to be submitted in early 2026.
Leaders Welcome the New Development
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:
“I’m extremely proud to help bring the first new council homes to the Battersea Power Station development through City Hall funding. Partnership working is essential to delivering more high-quality and sustainable council homes for Londoners. Tackling the housing crisis remains one of my top priorities, and this project supports our mission to build a fairer, more affordable city.”
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, added:
“We’re committed to delivering the genuinely affordable homes that local people need. This partnership gives us a real opportunity to do that right in the heart of one of London’s most iconic landmarks. These will be high-quality council homes for families who need them most. This project marks an important step in our new Growth Plan and ensures that new opportunities are created for everyone.”
